NEWS FROM THE SENIORS - SEPTEMBER 2023

.

Approaching the end of the season now with only a couple of matches left at the time of writing. If you didn’t manage to get into the team for any of this year’s matches – look out for notices next year and get your name down! Advance Notices go up three weeks before each match – keep looking! The 2023 Fixture List will also be posted on this website well in advance so make a note in your diaries!

This year’s Away Day was held at Aldersey Green and the main competition was won by Tim Handford, Runner Up Mick Boden. The putting competition was won by John Walker, second, John Burgess. Congratulations also to Paul Randall and Bob Lee for the longest drive and nearest the pin respectively! Well Done to all! Next year will be at Houghwood Golf Club on Thursday 8th August 2024

The season’s final event was a most enjoyable match vs the Ladies Section. The rain just about kept away despite threatening and a good time was had by all such that it was decided, unanimously, to be included in next year’s fixture list. The result, something of an ‘honourable draw’, slightly favouring the Seniors! Sadly, the organiser forgot to record the event by taking a photograph – sorry you just can’t get the staff!!

We now turn our attention to the closed season and the Winter Programme. The Winter 9 hole Seniors Competition is set to return again on 3rd October. In addition to winning a prize for each competition, it also provides opportunity to win the Freda Newlove Trophy and Prize for the 4 best cumulative scores from the 6 competitions up to and including March next year. Please see the Fixture List on this website for the dates (as above).

A full programme of speakers has also now been arranged for our Seniors Lunches and, again, the details of these can be found below. A lot of effort goes in to preparing for these talks especially by those of our members willing to ‘volunteer’! I do hope that as many of you as possible will show your support for these efforts by attending and then join us after for lunch just to ensure the social side of our activities continue throughout the colder winter months. Please remember, guests are not only welcome, but actively encouraged!

Anyone reading this who is eligible and not a Seniors Section Member, please contact me on how to join as new members are always most welcome and we make it as easy as possible for you to do so!

Enjoy what remains of the season!

NEWS FROM THE SENIORS – SPRING 2023

The winner of the Freda Newlove Trophy for the Best 4 out of 6 cumulative scores in the Winter 9 Hole Competition, was Paul Thornton. Well done Paul on a consistent performance for the whole competition. Thank you to all for your continued support. Once again we were lucky with the weather without any of the competitions having to be postponed as in past years.

Now we are well into the Season proper which, for the Seniors Section, continues with the Seniors Open on 5th June, a great chance to introduce friends and relatives to the joys of playing Ashton on Mersey. The 3rd Seniors 18 hole Competition is set for 27th June. Congratulations to Don Milligan & Andy Brown for winning the first two Competitions. Matches with Local Clubs have now started . Watch out for the advance notices on the Seniors Notice Board 3 weeks prior to the scheduled date for each match and record your interest to play. We try very hard to give as many as possible a chance to play so don’t give up if, at your first attempt, you don’t get into the team.

Anyone in doubt about the Fixtures, a copy is displayed on the Notice Board in the Gentleman’s Locker Room and can also be downloaded, as above. We are always on the lookout for new Team Players so please don’t be bashful!

This year’s Veterans Trophy was won by Bob Lee – much to his surprise!! Well Done Bob; very well deserved. Congratulations, too, to John Burgess for winning the Ron Halliley Trophy for the best 9 holes after Bob.

Seniors Championship is scheduled for 18th July and the Seniors Away Day, at Aldersley Green, is booked for 8th August (keep an eye on the Notice Board). A full programme to anticipate!

Good Luck to you all and here’s hoping for a dry, sunny and enjoyable season! A particular mention to those of our Section who have been unable to play, through ill health or injury, and we wish you a speedy recovery and an early return to 18 holes if not, initially, to the 19th !! – Happy Golfing

Keith Gregson Trophy - Seniors K.O. Trophy Winners

At the Seniors Review Meeting the Keith Gregson Trophy ,Seniors Knockout 2022 was presented to Gary Denman and Don Milligan by Martin Lupton Seniors Organiser.

Seniors Section vs Ladies Section

An encouraging field of 23, Captain & Lady Captain included, played in this match in excellent conditions on a course which seems to get better and better all the time (we certainly couldn’t blame the greens for the putting!!)

The Seniors Section retained the Trophy but a most enjoyable day was finished off with a fine lunch and those surviving until the end of the meal are pictured

The consensus of opinion was that this should become an annual fixture and the Ladies are determined to do better next year

Thank you to all who took part and keep your eyes open for the date on next year’s Fixture List
